Tavares at a Loss Over Kariya Talks

Share

With the Mighty Ducks about to start the season Friday and more than two weeks having elapsed since they talked with the agent representing left wing Paul Kariya, President Tony Tavares might not have been joking when he said it might take “divine intervention” to end their stalemate and get Kariya back in uniform.

“I’m long past alarmed,” Tavares said Wednesday. “There is nothing to report. No change. What do we do? I don’t know at this point.”

Tavares maintained that Kariya’s agent, Don Baizley, has yet to propose a number that would establish parameters for a deal. Baizley said only, “We haven’t been able to agree on a value.”

It’s believed Kariya is waiting for the market to be set by Philadelphia Flyer center Eric Lindros, who has one season left on his contract but has been discussing an extension. Lindros’ father, Carl, who is also his agent, denied reports he had rejected a three-year, $27-million deal.
