TALENT WILL OUT

Jeannine Stein’s piece on Jenny McCarthy was a sad commentary on this fall’s new TV shows (“Must-See? We’ll See,” Sept. 28). The fact that the networks would hotly pursue this woman, only to wonder later whether she could act, seems the ultimate indictment.

NBC’s Warren Littlefield apparently has the goal of giving everyone without comedic talent their very own sitcom: Brooke Shields, Jonathan Silverman, Sharon Lawrence, Lea Thompson and now Jenny McCarthy, who answers the question of what a Playboy playmate would look like picking her nose.

Contrary to the networks’ advertisements, TV isn’t good, there’s nothing that’s must see, and instead of welcome home, I’m being encouraged to go out and rent videos.

How could Paramount sign someone to a sitcom deal if they don’t know if she can even act? I’m sure this is very comforting news to all those struggling actresses out there. The ones who have really paid their dues, toiling away for years, trying to perfect their craft. The ones who could be the next Meryl Streep or Jessica Lange, if only given half a chance. The ones who kept their clothes on.

From initial appearances, the Great Wasteland has another new inhabitant. McCarthy comes across as a rather bland, ‘90s Suzanne Somers. After a few more episodes like the first “Jenny,” NBC will wish it had committed to about 15 fewer shows.
