Dan Flynn Not the Man for the Job

Share

Having served Simi Valley as a teacher for more than 24 years in our local public school system, I am deeply troubled with the possible selection of Dan Flynn as our new superintendent.

Flynn does not have the experience to become a superintendent for a district the size of Simi Valley (20,000 students and a budget of $135 million). His qualifications are gravely lacking any upper management experience.

What appears to be occurring, is that Norm Walker, president of the school board, has tried to sneak in an unqualified candidate for the superintendent’s position. Both Walker and Flynn are involved in some of the same community/political organizations in this area. This whole situation sounds like “an old boys’ network” to me.

I encourage parents and community members to contact the school board and let it know of your concerns regarding Flynn’s lack of qualifications and experience. This community and the children of Simi Valley deserve the best and most competent superintendent. They do not deserve someone who is semi-experienced and minimally qualified to lead this district into the next century.

You would think that after years of following the activities of the Simi Valley school board, I would have seen everything, but now the board has embroiled itself in another controversy--three board members are seriously considering hiring Dan Flynn as the new superintendent.

Flynn has never been a top-level administrator of any school district, large or small. He has little administrative experience, little budget experience and very little chance of succeeding as Simi Valley’s superintendent because of his lack of qualifications and experience. Surely Simi Valley deserves better than what’s being offered by board President Norm Walker.
