With Brock Huard, the Washington Huskies were supposed to be a passing team. Rashaan Shehee has other ideas.

“Rashaan’s a talented guy,” Huard said. “When he gets that many carries, he’s going to do some great things.”

Shehee ran for 146 yards and a touchdown in 29 carries and Huard passed for two touchdowns to lead the No. 10 Huskies to a 26-14 victory over No. 25 Arizona State in their Pacific 10 Conference opener Saturday.

The defending champion Sun Devils (3-2, 1-1) had an 11-game Pac-10 winning streak broken. Arizona State beat Washington in the season opener in Tempe last year and went to the Rose Bowl with a perfect conference record, while the Huskies were second with one defeat.

Shehee, who beat Arizona State with a 30-yard halfback pass with 2:53 left in a game here two years ago, also caught three passes for 70 yards. He scored on a one-yard run at the end of the first half.

“When your missed tackles go up, that’s the sign of a great back,” Arizona State Coach Bruce Snyder said. “He was hard to tackle.”

Shehee said he was determined to prove his worth as a running back after being held to 28 yards in 11 carries by Nebraska.

“Everyone took it personally. A Washington team does not lose like that. It does not like to lose, period,” Shehee said.

Huard, coming back from a sprained ankle in a loss to Nebraska two weeks ago, completed eight of 19 passes for 150 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to Jerome Pathon in the first quarter and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Mike Reed in the fourth quarter. He did throw his first interception of the season, getting picked off by Larry Johnson in the second quarter.

On a stormy day before 74,986 at Husky Stadium, the Huskies (3-1, 1-0) sacked redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Kealy nine times, two each by Jason Chorak, Jerry Jensen and Chris Campbell.
