The Washington Capitals continued their early-season assault on the NHL’s best goaltenders Saturday night at Landover, Md.

One night after scoring six times against Dominik Hasek and Buffalo, Washington used goals from Steve Konowalchuk, Dale Hunter, Mark Tinordi and Richard Zednik to hand Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils a 4-1 defeat.

“It’s only three games into the season, and I don’t think anybody’s ordering rings yet,” Washington Coach Ron Wilson said.

“It’s a long way to go, but it certainly goes toward building our confidence.”

Montreal 4, Boston 1--Mark Recchi scored three goals and Saku Koivu assisted on four as the Canadiens easily handled the Bruins at Boston.

New York Islanders 3, Toronto 0--Tommy Salo stopped all 28 shots he faced and Claude Lapointe scored twice to lift the Islanders at Uniondale, N.Y.

The shutout was the sixth of Salo’s career, and was only the second time the Islanders have shut out the Maple Leafs in their 26-year history.

Florida 5, Pittsburgh 3--Dave Gagner had three goals and Bill Lindsay scored the tie-breaker with 18 seconds left in the third period to give the Panthers a victory at Pittsburgh.

The Panthers scored three goals in the last 2:29.

The Blues, playing their third game in four days, gave No. 1 goaltender Grant Fuhr the night off after Fuhr started the first two.
