Council to Consider Funding for Police

Share

The city may get one more police officer and patrol vehicles could be equipped with video cameras if the City Council tonight approves a proposal on how to spend state law enforcement grant money.

The 1997-98 state budget appropriated $100 million for the Citizens Option for Public Safety, or COPS, program, which is designed to supplement front-line law enforcement. The Placentia Police Department has been awarded $104,764, the first of a three-year grant.

Police are recommending using a portion of the grant money to hire a full-time officer in January.

Since the new officer would not be hired until halfway through the fiscal year, only $35,004 of the grant money would be spent. The department proposes to use the remaining $69,760 to place video cameras in 13 patrol cars.

The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 401 E. Chapman Ave. Information: (714) 993-8231.
