Aftershock of 1994 Quake Registers 2.9
A 2.9-magnitude earthquake shook an area two miles west of San Fernando on Monday afternoon, a Caltech spokesman said.
The 2:27 p.m. temblor was an aftershock of the 1994 Northridge earthquake, said Max Benadites, a Caltech spokesman. As of July, more than 14,000 aftershocks of the Northridge earthquake have jolted sections of the San Fernando Valley, Benadites said.
The Northridge earthquake was responsible for 72 deaths and more than 11,800 injuries.
Damage estimates range in the $40-billion area, making the 6.7-magnitude temblor the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history.
