Retired Fire Captain Gets Kidney From Colleague
A retired Long Beach fire captain received the ultimate assistance from a colleague Tuesday: a healthy kidney.
Jason Wight, 38, a firefighter who donated the kidney, and his former boss, Carl Scheu, 54, are recovering after four hours of surgery, said a spokeswoman for Loma Linda University Medical Center in San Bernardino County.
“The operation went well and both men should be home within a week,” said the spokeswoman, Gracie Garner.
Wight offered to give a kidney to Scheu after he learned that his former boss required dialysis treatment every night. Scheu retired after his kidneys failed when he contracted hepatitis B while working as a paramedic.
