Infant Critically Hurt in Possible Hit-and-Run

An infant boy, the possible victim of a hit-and-run accident, was airlifted to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles on Wednesday evening in critical condition.

Firefighters arrived about 7 p.m. to a house in the 11400 block of Borden Avenue and found a father holding his infant son. The boy, whose exact age had not yet been determined, was unconscious and bruised from head to toe, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey.

The boy was breathing and had a pulse, but he was flaccid and his right eye was dilated--symptoms consistent with a head injury, Humphrey said.

Spanish-speaking paramedics at the scene translated accounts of witnesses and family members who said they found the boy in the street, but could not provide further details for officials.

The infant’s injuries are consistent with those of a child being hit by a car, Humphrey said, though no one apparently saw the boy get hit.

Police were called to the scene for further investigation “due to the inconclusive information offered to paramedics,” Humphrey said. “We’re not saying it’s foul play.”

The boy was taken to nearby Pacoima Recreation Center, where firefighters cleared a youth football game off the field so a helicopter could land and fly the boy to Childrens Hospital, Humphrey said.
