Johnson Makes His First Error

Share

Everyone makes mistakes, even Marlin catcher Charles Johnson.

Although not often.

Johnson committed his first error of the season in the first inning of Atlanta’s 7-1 victory in Game 2 of the NL championship series.

Johnson fielded a bunt by Kenny Lofton and tried to throw him out at first, but the ball got past first baseman Jeff Conine.

A two-time Gold Glove winner, Johnson set the record for consecutive errorless games by a catcher this season with 123. Johnson handled 1,287 chances during the regular season without an “E-2” in sight.

Johnson also has the record for consecutive errorless games by a catcher in a career with 171. Despite the error, Johnson’s streaks are unaffected because postseason games are not included.

Atlanta third baseman Chipper Jones was angry at himself for letting a ball hit by Moises Alou in Game 1 get past him for a bases-clearing double. The hit was among the keys to the Marlins’ 5-3 victory.

Nothing got past Jones in Game 2 as he handled five fielding chances smoothly. It was just what Jones needed.

“You always want to jump right back in the saddle when you have a bad night,” Jones said. “I got a couple of balls hit to me early and that made me comfortable out there.”
