N.Y. Freeway Closed in Truck Explosion
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A gasoline tanker truck collided with a car, crashed and exploded below a highway near Yonkers, buckling the road, killing the driver of the car and forcing thousands of commuters to find another route to work. Chunks of concrete continued to rain down from the damaged New York State Thruway hours after the crash. The freeway was closed indefinitely. The truck driver escaped with just a leg injury. The truck, which was carrying 8,800 gallons of fuel, was clipped by the car shortly after midnight.
