Warriors Beat No. 3 Irvine in Cross-Country

Mary Moore finished first in 18 minutes 9 seconds to lead No. 6 Woodbridge to a 17-30 upset of No. 3 Irvine in Sea View League girls’ cross-country Thursday.

Ellie Stephens took fifth place for the Warriors in 19:34, which placed five runners in the top nine on Woodbridge’s three-mile course.

In other Sea View League meets:

No. 8 El Toro 23, No. 7 Corona del Mar 33--Stefani Fellows finished first in 19:25 to pace El Toro (2-1) on O’Neill Park’s three-mile course.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Dana Hills 26, No. 2 Mission Viejo 31--Kendal Gilling won the race for Mission Viejo in 18:05, but Dana Hills earned the upset. Christa Fitzgerald finished third in 18:17 for Dana Hills (2-0), Melissa Haddy was fourth (18:30) and Michelle Smith fifth (18:49). April Lopez took second for Mission Viejo (1-1) with 18:08 on the three-mile course at Dana Hills.

In Freeway League boys’ cross-country:

No. 8 Sonora 15, Fullerton 45--John West finished first in 16:50 for Sonora (2-0) on Craig Park’s three-mile course.

In the Garden Grove League:

No. 10 Santiago wins--Rene Rangel won the race for Santiago (2-0) in the league opening tri-meet at Mile Square Park. Rangel finished in 15:56, on the three-mile course, leading his team to a 19-36 victory over Garden Grove and a 16-39 victory over Los Amigos.

In the Sea View League:

No. 5 Irvine 15, Woodbridge 48--Eric Graff ran 16:05 to lead Irvine (2-0) at Woodbridge.

No. 6 El Toro 19, Corona del Mar 38--El Toro’s Danny Lee finished first in 15:37, breaking the O’Neill Park course record set by Santa Margarita’s Michael Murray in 1995 and tied by Lee last season.

Newport Harbor 26, Santa Margarita 30--Steve Jensen and Ryan Jensen finished second and third for Newport Harbor (2-0). Santa Margarita’s Brendon VonGunther won the race in 16:13 over the three-mile Back Bay course.

In the Sunset League:

No. 9 Edison 21, Marina 39--Andy Knutsen won the race for Edison (2-0) in 16:48 on a 3.1-mile course at Fairview Park. Freshman Scott Brandos took second for Edison in 17:16.

In Pacific Coast League girls’ volleyball:

No. 6 Laguna Beach 3, Aliso Niguel 0--Megan Smith had nine kills in the 15-0, 15-1, 15-3 victory. Laguna Beach is 4-1, 2-0.

In the South Coast League:

No. 10 Capistrano Valley 3, Dana Hills 1--Kristen Gallup had 15 kills and Rochelle Currier had 10 for Capistrano Valley (6-2, 1-1), which won, 15-10, 15-7, 14-16, 15-7.

In the Sunset League:

No. 1 Fountain Valley 3, Los Alamitos 0--Melissa Plass had 44 assists as Fountain Valley (6-2, 1-1), won, 15-5, 15-10, 15-7.

No. 7 Marina 3, No. 2 Huntington Beach 0--Following its victory over top-ranked Fountain Valley Tuesday, Marina came back with another upset, defeating the Oilers, 15-9, 15-9, 15-13. Lindsay Phillips had 22 kills and Chanda McLeod had 16 and Ashley Phillips had 44 assists for Marina (6-1, 2-0).

No. 9 Esperanza 3, Edison 1--Julia Rex had 15 kills in the 15-9, 14-16, 16-14, 15-7 victory for Esperanza (5-1, 1-1). Harmony Gates led Edison (1-7, 0-2) with 11 kills.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ water polo:

No. 6 Laguna Beach 10, University 6--Evan Lutz scored six goals for Laguna Beach (10-4, 1-0).
