FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Jeff Kiesendahl and Darvin Fischer, La Crescenta, won recent ABA tournament with five largemouth bass totaling 17.64 pounds, largest 5.45, on crankbaits. Bob Dunn, Chatsworth, 14-pound striped bass, on a spoon. Raul Perez, Sylmar, 12-pound striped bass, on a surface plug. Ricky Rodriguez, Van Nuys, 16-pound catfish, on mudsucker at lower lake.

LAKE PIRU--Largemouth bass bite slow to fair. Crappie and bluegill bite picking up, though, with mini-jigs and mealworms getting a lot of fish in the marina area. Trout activity slow despite first plant of season. Catfish bite fair near parking lot, with mackerel and chicken liver the top producers.

PYRAMID LAKE--Striped bass very active, with fish averaging 5 pounds biting on anchovies and surface plugs. Largemouth bass active in semi-shallows, biting mostly on spinnerbaits. Crappie and bluegill fairly active. Edward Muntz, Northridge, 2-0 crappie.

LAKE CACHUMA--Red ear perch providing most action, which does not please those after bigger fish. Night crawler pieces doing best. William James Sedar, Santa Ynez, nine red ear, one bluegill and a 4-pound largemouth, on night crawlers at east end. Catfish next best bet. Trout bite slow and largemouth bass slow.

LAKE CASITAS--Largemouth bass activity picking up, primarily in Mornings and afternoons. Harry Waycasy, Ojai, 10-4 bass, on Castaic soft bait. Alex Aftandilianf, West Hills, 8-4 bass, on Rat-l-Trap. Catfish still biting on mackerel in shallows, but expected to move deeper as water cools.

CORONA LAKE--Mike Bradshaw, a lake regular from Riverside, finally scored big, catching a 52-8 catfish, on mackerel in the tree area. Lots of stringers being filled with much smaller fish.

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES--How’s this for good catfishing: a 72-pound stringer (topped by a 22-pounder), a 48-9 stringer, a 46-5 stringer. The list goes on. All it takes to catch a fish or two or three is a chunk of mackerel on a hook, and some patience.

IRVINE LAKE--Largemouth bass are feeding on shad and biting readily on shad-like lures and plastic worms. Hybrid striped bass also boiling on shad, biting on mini-jigs and Roostertails. Crappie bite fair. Catfish bite slowing down as fish move to deeper water. An RV and boat show will be held Sunday in the parking lot.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Largemouth bass active on surface in the morning, sluggish during the day. Dennis Anderson, Costa Mesa, 7 1/2-pound bass and several smaller bass, on a black plastic worm. Catfish active at night, averaging 2-3 pounds.

LAKE SKINNER--Striped bass are deep, but some are being caught on anchovies and chicken livers. Catfish are moving to deeper water and biting on same baits. Largemouth bass fairly active at north and south shores, being caught mostly on dark-colored plastics.

LAKE PERRIS--Largemouth bass fairly active, but the bits isn’t very consistent. Ron Ruiz, Pomona, 6-8 bass, on eight-inch plastic worm at Point 6. Bluegill bite good. Jim Simkins, Ontario, 42 bluegill totaling 27 pounds, on crickets and jigs at Tire Reef.

BIG BEAR LAKE--An 18-pound catfish tops the list, but most people are fishing for trout. Lots of limits of mostly pan-sized rainbows. Night crawler-flasher combos, Needlefish-flasher combos, Power Bait and Sierra Gold accounting for most.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Hodges produced an 11-2 bass (plastic worm at narrows) and El Capitan yielded a 9-5. A fair to good bite--mostly for much smaller fish--is in progress at both reservoirs. Bluegill most active at San Vicente. Crappie and catfish action best at Hodges.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Lots of trout being caught on Rapalas and spinners, as well as on Power Bait. Little else happening.

BISHOP--Good fishing at all Bishop Creek Canyon lakes, and in the creek itself. A 5-pound brown was a bonus for Joe Maugiotta, Santa Barbar, who used a white tube jig at South Lake.

MAMMOTH LAKES--Lots of limits and even a few big fish being caught throughout region. Greg McIver, Manhattan Beach, 5-pound rainbow in Convict Creek. A 5-12 (silver Super Duper) and a 4-7 (mosquito fly) were caught at Rock Creek Lake, and a 3-8 (night crawler) at lower Rock Creek.

JUNE LAKE--All lakes on the scenic loop worth a try. Each has produced a 5-pounder or bigger in the past week, with Rapalas and Power Bait the top catchers. Rush Creek fair on worms, spinners and salmon eggs.

BRIDGEPORT--Bridgeport Lake remains the best bet, as boaters and bank fishermen are getting rainbows and browns to about 4 pounds. Bigger fish beginning to stir throughout region, with Twin Lakes offering the best chance for a 10-plus-pounder. East Walker River remains productive as well, with lure fishermen and flu fishermen scoring quality rainbows and browns.
