Courses Offered to Help Merchants Brace for Storms

In order to prepare for possible El Nino storms, merchants at the Santa Monica pier are signing up for classes offered by the city Fire Department.
The three classes will offer safety tips, including first aid, rescuing people trapped under fallen objects and securing furniture and other items to walls.
The six-hour sessions, which also are open to the public, will be held Dec. 6, Jan. 10 and Jan. 17, said Paula Thornton, spokeswoman for the Pier Restoration Corp., which is helping to coordinate the effort.
In addition, she said, merchants are assigning badges identifying workers who may need emergency access to businesses during a storm.
As a result of El Nino storms in 1983, 100,000 square feet of the pier collapsed into the ocean.
