Top-seeded Chantal Vandierendonck, the seven-time women’s champion, was eliminated from the quarterfinals of the 18th U.S. Open Wheelchair tennis tournament after defaulting Wednesday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.
Vandierendonck, of the Netherlands, arrived 45 minutes late for her morning match against Mary Ann O’Neill (Clarksville, Tenn.) and was disqualified. Along with O’Neill, Sharon Clark (San Jose) advanced to Friday’s semifinals with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over Yuka Chokyu (Canada).
