UCI Hosts Forum on Primary Initiative
In what is expected to yield a lively exchange, UC Irvine will sponsor a public forum today on Proposition 198, the 1996 voter-approved initiative that set the stage for an open primary in California.
“Assessing the Open Primary in California” will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. in Social Sciences Plaza A, Room 2112.
Sponsored by UCI’s Department of Politics and Society, the discussion will feature four of the expert witnesses who recently testified for or against Prop. 198 before the California Supreme Court.
The state Democratic and Republican parties are challenging the proposition, which would allow Republicans to vote Democrat, and vice versa, during primary elections. The Supreme Court has yet to decide the constitutionality of the proposition.
