A fire at a four-story Marina del Rey apartment building Thursday morning caused $350,000 in damage and left an elderly woman hospitalized with minor smoke inhalation, authorities said.

Shortly after 8 a.m., county firefighters were called to the Admiralty Apartments in the 4100 block of Admiralty Way, where a second-floor unit in the brick building was engulfed in flames. The firefighters, assisted by the Los Angeles City Fire Department, doused the flames in about 25 minutes, county inspector Mark Tolbert said.

The fire was blazing in the kitchen of Rick Puleo’s apartment when he returned from a trip to the laundry room, Puleo said. He said that he was not cooking anything and had not left any of the kitchen appliances turned on when he left his apartment.

One of Puleo’s cats died in the fire and another was transported to a veterinary hospital. Firefighters also helped to treat other pets affected by the smoke.

All of the tenants were evacuated from the building.

Tolbert said firefighters were investigating the cause of the blaze.
