Crescenta Valley Downs La Serna

Senior driver Andrew Kang scored the last of his three goals with 2:24 remaining in the third quarter to give Crescenta Valley High a 9-8 victory over La Serna in a water polo match Friday at Crescenta Valley.

Kang scored twice in the first quarter and the Falcons (15-2), ranked fourth in the Southern Section Division III, took a 5-2 advantage on La Serna (13-7), ranked fifth in the division.

Carlos Pelayo and Brian Lang each scored two goals for Crescenta Valley, and Justin Payne and Kenny Carpenter had one each.

Goalie Brian Hasbrouck held La Serna scoreless in the fourth quarter, making three of his 14 saves. Hasbrouck had seven saves each half.

Carpenter leads the Falcons with 53 goals and Payne has 43. Kang has scored 35 goals, Lang has 34 and Pelayo is at 31.

Jason Price and Jared Green, a two-time All-Southern Section two-meter man playing in his first game since breaking a hand in the season opener, each scored two goals for La Serna.

Royal 14, Mira Costa 12--Ryan Apperson scored seven goals, including two in overtime for the Highlanders (16-3) at Mira Costa.

David Radka had four goals, including one in overtime, and Jason Perry had three for Royal.

Garrett Herzer made 17 saves for Royal.

The Highlanders are ranked third in the Southern Section Division IV poll, while the Spartans are ranked first in Division III.

Burroughs 17, Keppel 3--Junior Alex Triandos scored three goals for the Indians (12-5, 1-0) in an Almont League game at Barnes Park in Monterey Park.

Agoura 11, Newbury Park 3--Eugene Lai scored three of his four goals in the second quarter to help the Chargers (15-4, 3-0) to a 6-1 halftime lead in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.

Agoura played most of the game without Elliot Hirsch, who suffered a dislocated right thumb in the first quarter. Three goals by Hans Larsen helped make up for the loss.

MEN’S SOCCER

Santa Barbara 2, Moorpark 0--The Raiders (7-3-2, 1-1-1) struggled against the defending JC state champion after losing center halfback Michael Wright to a red card early in the Western State Conference match at Moorpark.

Moorpark sweeper Jason Leonard also was red-carded with five minutes to play, and the Raiders lost outside halfback Johnny Rotunno to a knee injury.

Moorpark’s Justin Hanover, who had 15 saves, shut out Santa Barbara (11-1-1, 3-0) until Geraldo Alvarado and Tristan Corbett scored in the last 10 minutes.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Moorpark 10, Oxnard 0--Tiffany Tackett had a goal and four assists for the Raiders (7-5-1, 6-2-1) in a WSC match at Moorpark.

Goalkeepers Leilagi Tuitama and Norma Jauregui combined to make 15 saves for Oxnard (0-12, 0-10).

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Arizona State Invitational--Javier Ramirez of Cal State Northridge ran 15th and the Matadors finished eighth at Freestone Park.

Ramirez, a junior from Nordhoff High, clocked 25:45 over the 8,000-meter (nearly five-mile) course to help Northridge to a 231-point total.

Stanford, defending NCAA champion, ran its B team and won the team title with 47 points.

Junior John Greene finished 34th in 26:22 and freshman Nick Hamlin was 36th in 26:28 for the Matadors.

WOMEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Arizona State Invitational--Gudrun Skuladottir finished 17th and Andrea Bruins of Cal State Northridge was 19th to help the Matadors to sixth place in the meet at Freestone Park.

Skuladottir, a native of Iceland, ran 19:20 and Bruins timed 19:24 over the 5,000-meter course to help Northridge total 180 points.

Stanford, defending NCAA champion, ran its B team and won the team title, 46-80, over Arizona State.

Shaluinn Fullove, from Louisville High, finished fourth for Stanford in 18:35. Fullove won the 1995 state Division IV high school title.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Calabasas 12, Flintridge Sacred Heart 6--Shervin Saedinia, who is 33-0 in sets this season for the Coyotes (10-2), swept three sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, in a nonleague match at Flintridge Sacred Heart (1-12).
