Brea Defense Dominates in a Romp Over Savanna

Brea Olinda’s stifling defense did not allow Savanna a first down until late in the third quarter Friday night and the Wildcats coasted to a 33-6 victory in an Orange League opener at Western High.

Brea built a 19-0 lead before Savanna’s offense made a first down with 3 minutes 27 seconds left in the third quarter. The Wildcat offense gained only three yards after halftime, but Brea scored two second-half touchdowns without taking a center snap.

Deonta Birdsong returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown with 1:16 left in the third quarter. Four plays later, Rasuli Webster returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown as the Wildcats increased their lead to 33-0.

Brea Olinda (5-1, 1-0 in league) opened the game with a 67-yard pass from Travis Blood to Ron Benigno. Scott Lieng completed the 79-yard opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The extra point try was blocked by Alfred Pene.

The offensive line gave Scott Davis enough time to boot a 31-yard field goal late in the first quarter for Brea.

Brea increased its lead to 16-0 on a 35-yard run by Webster midway through the second quarter.

Davis connected on a 47-yard field goal with 4:18 left in the third quarter to increase the lead to 19-0.

Savanna (3-3, 0-1) got on the scoreboard with 50 seconds left in the game on a six-yard touchdown run by Jason Brown.

The Brea defensive line of Sef Morris, Aaron Ison, Chris Shoemaker, Nate Criner and Fred Thomas with help from the defensive backfield of Geno Rose, Webster, Eric Albrecht, Joe Perine, Birdsong and Lieng held Savanna to minus one yard in the first half.

Camron King had 93 yards rushing, most in the fourth quarter, for the Rebels.
