Garden Grove, Santiago Settle For 14-14 Tie

Both Santiago and Garden Grove were looking for their first Garden Grove League victory Friday night at Garden Grove High.

Come next week, the situation will remain the same.

The game, which ended in a tie, 14-14, was filled with missed opportunities. The teams combined for six turnovers, five of them in the second half.

One turnover came on the final play of the game. Argonaut defensive back Ulysses Linares intercepted a Ben Tran desperation pass inside his 20. He was stopped by Tran inside the Santiago 25.

The Cavaliers (1-4-1, 0-2-1) took only three plays to score on its opening drive. Running back James Thomas’ 37-yard touchdown run put Santiago ahead, 7-0.

Garden Grove (1-4-1, 0-1-1) answered with a four-play, 60-yard drive. The touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from Tran to receiver Matt Revelle.

Early in the third quarter, the Cavaliers drove down to the Garden Grove 5 when the Argonauts recovered Thomas fumble.

Garden Grove reached the Cavalier 25, but quarterback Rick Welty’s pass was intercepted by Kalolo Leauasoga.

Late in the fourth quarter, Santiago had two possessions inside the Argonaut 50, but failed to get in position to score.
