Duck Fans Are Questioning What’s Between Disney’s Ears

Share

The state of the Mighty Ducks’ organization can be summed up in a classic Disney song:

M-I-C . . . See you in the cellar.

K-E-Y . . . Why? Because Eisner is an idiot.

M-O-U-S-E.

Hey, Duck fans, don’t worry about losing your biggest star. There is no way Disney would let him walk. What with all the shirts, hats, dolls, figurines, and the animated TV program, they couldn’t afford to let him walk. Look at the track record. Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, all with Disney since the ‘30s. Yep, whatever it takes to keep Wild Wing with the Mighty Ducks, Disney will do it!

Let’s fast-forward to July 1, 1998, and see how the Ducks did in the 97-98 season:

* $7 million available to spend on free agents as Paul Kariya has signed to play in Europe.

* Pierre Page fired, made scapegoat for team’s last-place finish.

* Players’ union chief Bob Goodenow hired to replace Page. “He’s the best coach available,” says Tony Tavares.

* “He got lucky” says Jack Ferreira, commenting on Ron Wilson’s being named coach of the year for the Washington Capitals.

* Commissioner Gary Bettman intervenes on behalf of the NHL and renames the franchise the Mighty Stupid Ducks of Anaheim.

I know what Paul Kariya does to earn $7 million. I do not know what Mike Ovitz did to earn $90 million.

Hey, Eisner, why don’t you take a pay cut to help make ends meet?

Disney speaks out of both sides of their mouth when convenient. Disney Sports makes me miss the Gene Autry years.

Paul Who?

Stop blaming Disney for Kariya’s no-show. The guy is the new kid on the block and he is not happy with $7 million a year? He should show a little loyalty to fans, if not to the club. Let him sit home, and believe me, no other club will match this offer.
