Firefighters continued Saturday to try to put out a flare-up of the Baker Canyon fire and expected to have the blaze under control by early this morning.

About 1,200 firefighters were on the scene throughout the day as the fire was burning in the direction of Cleveland National Forest, said Kymbra Fleming, a spokeswoman for the Orange County Fire Authority.

The new fire broke out near State Spur and Black Star Canyon Road. As of late afternoon, 350 acres of brush had burned as a result of the flare-up, which started two miles east of Irvine Lake. It was caused by windblown embers from the original fire.

There have been no reports of injuries, no evacuations and no structures damaged, Fleming said.

The Baker Canyon fire started late Monday night on the 100-acre grounds of a metal recycling business and has now blackened 5,950 acres. The original fire has been extinguished but crews remain on the scene to clean up and to monitor any hot spots, Fleming said.
