Police Chief’s Backers to Protest His Leave Tonight at City Hall

Supporters of Police Chief John R. Robertson, who was placed on paid leave last week pending an internal investigation, are holding a rally in front of City Hall tonight to protest the action.
“We’re putting out this opportunity for people who have expressed their frustration and want to send a message to the chief and the City Council,” said Shannon Tucker, a community activist who is helping to organize the rally.
City officials, with the support of the City Council, placed Robertson on administrative leave Wednesday after allegations his department had become a “hostile workplace,” Personnel Director Steven V. Pham said.
City officials declined further comment. Robertson said he could not discuss the case.
The chief’s attorney, David L. Miller, alleged that City Hall officials were retaliating against Robertson because he was getting close to exposing their roles in allegations of financial impropriety involving the city’s trash hauler and recycling companies.
The protest begins at 5 p.m. at City Hall, 300 E. Chapman Ave.
