The body of an 18-year-old man who had been shot at close range was found early Tuesday in a car beside the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway in Baldwin Park, authorities said.

Robert Cabrera, of Baldwin Park, was shot in the upper body, said Baldwin Park Police Lt. Michael Bennett.

His body was discovered in a White VW Jetta at the Frazier Street offramp about 5:30 a.m. by a tow-truck driver, Bennett said.

The driver’s side window of the car was shattered, Bennett said. There was no weapon in the vehicle and no evidence to indicate there had been a problem with the car, he said.

“It appears the shots came from [within] the vehicle or very near the vehicle,” Bennett said. “It definitely wasn’t a sniper.”

Investigation of the shooting slowed rush-hour traffic to a crawl.

There was no indication that the incident was connected to the slaying of a nurse who was gunned down early Monday as she drove on the eastbound Pomona Freeway near the I-15 interchange, authorities said.
