Computer Revamp Costs Still Rising
The cost of revamping the county’s computer system, including preparing for the impending conversion to new dates in 2000, is at $10.1 million--and climbing.
County supervisors approved spending another $808,719 Tuesday for professional services from American Management Systems, which has the contract to update the aging computer system.
It was the 19th amendment to the county contract.
County officials in March estimated that reworking the county’s system to recognize 2000-plus dates would cost from $5 million to $10 million.
The work is necessary because most computers only recognize the last two digits of the year, meaning that when 1999 becomes 2000, the computer would recognize the date as 1900.
