Lindros Awaits Contract Decision

An arbitrator will decide no later than Nov. 12 whether the New York Islanders must pay Brett Lindros the $5.6 million left on the contract he signed in 1994, Lindros’s father said.

“We were extremely pleased that this is going ahead like this,” said Carl Lindros, who serves as his son’s agent. The hearing will be held in Chicago. NHL arbitrator John Sands set the Nov. 12 deadline Friday.

Lindros, the Islanders’ first-round selection in 1994 and brother of Philadelphia Flyers captain Eric Lindros, retired in May 1996 after just two seasons in the National Hockey League because of a series of concussions.

He originally signed a five-year, $7.5 million contract with New York. He hasn’t been paid $5.6 million for the final three seasons.

The Islanders maintain that he didn’t disclose concussions he suffered playing junior hockey before the team drafted him. The Islanders insurance carrier, Boston Mutual, is refusing to pay the 80 percent of the salary it insured, Carl Lindros said. He denies that his son withheld any information.

The Islanders won’t pay the salary either.
