Petitions Filed to Recall 2 Members of City Council

A campaign to recall two city council members in Gardena is heating up. Recall organizers filed petitions with the city clerk and may be gathering signatures as early as Oct. 31 to recall council members James Cragin and Gwen Duffy.

City Clerk May Doi has 10 days to approve or turn down the petitions. If they are approved, the recall committee can begin gathering the 4,000 signatures per candidate needed to place a recall measure on the ballot.

Cragin and Duffy are the target of a recall effort because they voted not to place City Manager Ken Landau on administrative leave while the district attorney’s office is investigating him for allegedly inflating his travel expenses.

Cragin said he and Duffy decided not to put Landau on administrative leave because the district attorney’s investigation and possible trial could drag on for months or years. Instead, they prefer to offer him a contract buyout, Cragin said.

Cragin and Duffy have been on the council since 1982.
