Police Count on Grant to Fund New Officers

Police officials said they feel secure enough about the stability of money they are receiving through a state grant program to hire three officers.

Police Chief Richard M. Tefank said the money flowing from the Citizens Option for Public Safety program--known as COPS--will be steady through 2000. And if it ends at that point, the department will have had enough retirements to keep the new officers, he said.

The City Council unanimously agreed this week to allow Tefank to hire a detective for the gang unit and two officers to focus on problems in specific neighborhoods.
