City Will Help Pay to Gate Condo Complex

Share

A crime-fighting plan to turn a condominium complex near the Police Department into a gated community received a boost this week when the City Council said it would chip in money for the $140,000 project.

The council will give final consideration to a financing plan in either late December or January. Construction on the gates and fences for the Cinnamon Tree complex at Chapman Avenue and Kraemer Boulevard could start in February.

Under the plan, the Cinnamon Tree homeowners association will pay $42,000. The city Redevelopment Agency will lend the association $28,000, with repayment on the low-interest loan due in five years. The agency also will provide a $70,000 loan, with repayment deferred as long as the fences and gates are properly maintained.

Residents say gating the 280-unit complex will help to reduce crime and increase safety. “Our place is far more safe today” as a result of city and Police Department assistance, said Mike Perez, the condo association president.
