Mater Dei’s Walker, Ryan Pick Colleges

Mater Dei softball players Robin Walker and Courtney Ryan made college commitments, Coach Doug Myers announced Thursday.

Walker, a shortstop, made an oral commitment to attend Stanford. She batted .363, scored 24 runs and had 24 runs batted in last season to help Mater Dei reach the Southern Section Division I semifinals.

Ryan, a catcher, batted .453 with 18 RBIs and scored 16 runs for the Monarchs. She will attend Texas.

Both will receive full scholarships, Myers said.

Mike Minier of Irvine and Jason Scott of Laguna Beach will be among 96 of the country’s top beach volleyball players expected to compete this weekend in the $30,000 Cuervo Gold Beach Volleyball Tour Championships in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, Fla.

Minier, a teacher at Capistrano Valley High, played at UC Irvine. Scott played at Laguna Beach High. Each qualified for the competition by winning at the regional championships in August in Hermosa Beach.

Edison’s surf team defeated Fountain Valley, 86-59, Thursday in a Sunset Surfing League meet at Huntington Beach.

Heat winners were Edison’s Dan Blanciak, Todd Hutton, Greg Cantley (longboard), Tim Reyes and Peter Labrador. Fountain Valley heat winners were Lauren Elliot (girls’ heat) and Tommy Brown (bodyboarding).
