Buried Utility Lines Proposed for 3 Areas
Three new areas will be considered by the City Council on Tuesday for part of the ongoing citywide effort to get utility lines buried underground.
The proposed districts, all in the eastern part of the city, are: Imperial Highway and Santa Ana Canyon Road, estimated to cost $2.1 million; La Palma Avenue and Kraemer Boulevard, $2.8 million; and Peralta Hills Drive and Lakeview Avenue, $150,000.
Removing the power poles and burying the transmission lines will improve the appearance of these areas, as well as enhance traffic safety, city officials said.
These projects are part of a citywide underground conversion program, expected to take 40 years to complete.
The city’s electric customers pay a 4% surcharge to cover the cost of burying city-owned electric lines. The overhead cables belonging to telephone, cable television and other communications companies within the districts must be buried at the expense of those companies.
