Skateboard Park Awaits Zone Change

Share

It’s an oft-heard complaint among teens in this suburban hamlet: There’s nothing to do in Simi Valley.

Unless, of course, City Council members agree Monday to allow skateboard parks in general industrial areas of the city, as they appear poised to do.

The zone change would clear the way for Simi Valley resident and skating enthusiast Todd Huber to open a skateboard park and museum here, which would be a city first.

Huber wants to open a 15,400-square-foot skateboard park at 4226 Valley Fair St., former site of a plastics molding building. Huber and many community backers believe the park, which would be open seven days a week to members only, would be a healthy antidote to the doldrums.

Huber’s idea and the zoning change have been endorsed by the Planning Commission, but they must also receive council approval for an ordinance change.

If approved, the zoning change also would allow ice- and roller-skating rinks in general industrial areas with a special-use permit.
