Nebraska Still No. 1; Michigan Rises

Nebraska, after its second consecutive shutout, retained the No. 1 ranking and Michigan moved up a notch to No. 4 in The Associated Press’ Top 25 poll.

The Cornhuskers (7-0) received 35 first-place votes and 1,704 points from the panel of 70 sportswriters and broadcasters, slightly increasing their lead over No. 2 Penn State.

The Nittany Lions (6-0), who did not play Saturday, had 25 first-place votes and 1,665 points. Last week, when the Huskers replaced the Lions at No. 1, Nebraska led in first-place votes, 33-26, and points, 1,698-1,668.

UCLA moved up one spot to No. 12.

Texas Christian Coach Pat Sullivan, whose Horned Frogs have been through disciplinary upheaval and controversy since 1996 and are 0-7, said he is leaving after this season. . . . University of Texas officials have reached a consensus that Coach John Mackovic should be fired or reassigned after this season, The Dallas Morning News reported. The newspaper cited two school sources it did not identify as saying officials are in agreement about starting the process to reassign or fire the sixth-year coach.
