Times Columnist Martinez Honored

Times columnist Al Martinez on Tuesday received the county Commission on Human Relations’s John Allen Buggs Award for his column’s contributions to racial understanding.

Martinez and 10 other individuals and organizations were honored at the commission’s 25th annual awards ceremony.

Other recipients were Cal State Northridge President Dr. Blenda Wilson, the city of Monterey Park, Santa Clarita educator Gary Mast, Toyota Motor Sales USA, the Pasadena YMCA’s “Voices Against Violence” program, the “Children of the Dream” program, KTTV-TV Channel 11, KKBT-FM (92.3), KCRW-FM (89.9) and the Harbor Gateway Human Relations Steering Committee.

Martinez was praised by commission officials for “his sense of humor and a sense of justice,” and for writing that makes “a major contribution to understanding our unique differences and recognizing our similarities.”

The award was named after John Buggs, the commission’s first executive director.
