Jones Lifts Zodiac to a 1-0 Win Over Riverboat Gamblers

John Jones’ second-half goal sparked the Zodiac to a 1-0 A-League soccer victory over the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers in the regular-season finale Sunday in front of an announced crowd of 833 at Tad Gormley Stadium.

Jones’ goal, with an assist from Alex Mingo, was scored in the 72nd minute.

Mingo was seven yards outside the penalty area on the right wing. He sent it to Jones, who dribbled through several defenders and crossed his shot into the upper left corner of the net past New Orleans goalkeeper Quinn O’Sullivan.

The Zodiac (11-17) made the most of its chance, as it didn’t have any other good scoring opportunities in the game.

The Riverboat Gamblers (16-12), however, had several good chances. Stern John and Clinton Browne each could not convert on their chances.

Both teams had nine shots on goal, with Zodiac goalkeeper Marco Cerna making one save.

The Riverboat Gamblers, who clinched first place in the Central Division two weeks ago and used two goaltenders in this game, had one save.
