Peanut on the Road

Mr. Peanut, the dapper, monocled symbol of Planter’s Peanuts, may not exactly have an athlete’s figure, but he (or rather, we suspect, somebody in a Mr. Peanut suit) begins a cross-country cycling tour today at the Manhattan Beach Pier. The ‘Nutster and world duathlon champion Ken Souza will ride a tandem bike 5,232 miles through 23 states, winding up in New York in time for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

For the exercise? No, to raise peanut consciousness (peanuts contain fiber and manganese, their fat is 75% unsaturated!). The top-hatted toff will also distribute close to 17 tons of peanuts along the way, so if you’re curious about his route, call (888) MRPNUTS.

What’s a Good Caesar Salad Wine?

“Most people don’t want to read a book on the topic. They just want quick and easy suggestions of what goes well together,” says Pamela Oppenheimer, creator of the Wyno Wallet Wizard, a wallet-sized accordion-fold guide to matching wine and food. Since you can spend a lifetime on the subject of wine and food pairing, serious wine people will find loads of objections to the recommendations, possibly starting with the very idea of matching wine with salad.

But Oppenheimer and Wyno Industries sales manager Wayne Oppenheimer are wine country insiders (she’s a former PR employee at Caymus Winery; he used to conduct tours at Robert Mondavi Winery), and the $2.50 Wallet Wizard is selling at more than 80 wineries, stores and tourist bureaus in the Napa and Sonoma area. Anybody who’s interested in the Wallet Wizard can call (888) WYNO-IND.
