Health Officials Plan Low-Cost Flu Clinics

Share

Flu season is just around the corner, and county health officials are reminding seniors, as well as adults or children with certain chronic diseases, to take advantage of low-cost flu clinics throughout Ventura County this fall.

Flu shots are important for senior citizens because they are more likely than others to become seriously ill if they get the flu, said Paul Russell, acting county health officer.

“Influenza viruses weaken the body, which makes older victims more susceptible to other infections,” Russell said. “That’s why, for seniors, prevention is essential.”

The vaccine is designed to protect seniors and others at high risk, such as adults and children who have chronic medical problems that would be seriously complicated by influenza. Caregivers and health care workers who deal with high-risk residents also are eligible. This year’s shot contains antigens to fight off three strains of influenza viruses expected to cause illness this winter: A/Bayern, A/Wuhan and B/Beijing.

Last year 16,000 county residents received flu shots through the health department and community hospital clinics. “For their protection, seniors need to get a flu shot every year,” Russell said. “That’s why we put so much time and effort into our annual community flu-shot clinics.”

Ventura County health officials will be offering influenza vaccines from Oct. 1 through Nov. 17 at sites in Camarillo, Oxnard, Simi Valley, Fillmore, Santa Paula and Thousand Oaks. Those who do not qualify for state vaccine or MediCare Part B will be charged $7.
