Mike McQueary, a fifth-year senior who backed up Wally Richardson and Kerry Collins, passed for a school-record 366 yards and two touchdowns. He was 21 for 36 before coming out with 12:38 to play. Next: Temple

3) TENNESSEE (2-0) BEAT UCLA, 30-24

Peyton Manning passed for 341 yards and two touchdowns, but the Volunteers were hanging on for dear life at the end as the Bruins, behind Cade McNown, came roaring back in the second half. Next: At Florida, Sept. 20

4) WASHINGTON (1-0) BEAT NO. 19 BYU, 42-20

Rashaan Shehee ran for 171 yards and one touchdown and caught a pass for another score to lead the Huskies. Shehee also scored two touchdowns in a season-opening victory over BYU last year. Next: San Diego State

5) FLORIDA STATE (1-0) BEAT NO. 23 USC, 14-7

The Seminoles weren’t impressive on offense, but they began what they hope will be a championship run by proving that they can win a close game on the road against a ranked opponent. Next: Maryland

Tar Heel quarterback Chris Keldorf looked like he’s still recovering from back and ankle surgery and losing 30 pounds. He had three passes intercepted. But tailback Jonathan Linton ran for 121 yards in 22 carries. Next: Stanford

8) COLORADO (1-0) BEAT NO. 24 COLO. ST., 31-21

The Buffaloes trailed, 14-7, at halftime, but senior wide receiver Phil Savoy delivered a halftime pep talk and Colorado turned it on the third quarter as Rashidi Barnes and Marcus Washington made key interceptions. Next: At Michigan

The Buckeyes got a week and a half off, and maybe they needed it. They opened with a lackluster 24-10 victory over Wyoming on Aug. 28. Last year, they opened with a 70-7 victory over Rice. Next: Bowling Green

10) LSU (1-0) BEAT TEXAS EL PASO, 55-3

The Tigers’ 55 points was the most they had scored in a season opener since 1930. Kevin Faulk scored three touchdowns in the first half, but left the game in the third quarter because of a hamstring injury. Next: At Mississippi State

11) NOTRE DAME (1-0) BEAT GEORGIA TECH, 17-13

Bob Davie learned in his first game as Irish coach just how nerve-racking the job can be. “We’re going to have to play a lot better in the future,” said a relieved Davie after Notre Dame scored with 2:37 left to win. Next: At Purdue

12) TEXAS (1-0) BEAT RUTGERS, 48-14

Ricky Williams rushed for three touchdowns and Aaron Humphrey intercepted three passes as the Longhorns warmed up for UCLA. Quarterback James Brown left the game late in the first half because of a sprained ankle. Next: UCLA

13) MIAMI (1-0) DID NOT PLAY

The Hurricanes, 45-14 winners over Baylor in their season opener, got an extra week to prepare for defending Pacific 10 champion Arizona State. That game will be nationally televised by CBS. Next: Arizona State

The Cardinal remained unbeaten in season openers against San Jose State and spoiled Spartan Coach Dave Baldwin’s debut. Stanford has a six-game winning streak dating to last season. Next: At North Carolina

18) CLEMSON (1-0) BEAT APPALACHIAN STATE, 23-12

This was the 33rd year in a row that the Tigers opened with a Southern Conference opponent. It was also their 33rd consecutive season-opening victory. Do we detect a pattern here? Next: At North Carolina State

19) BYU LOST TO NO. 4 WASHINGTON, 42-20

20) IOWA (1-0) BEAT NORTHERN IOWA, 66-0

The Hawkeyes scored on a fake reverse on the game’s first play--Tavian Banks zipping 63 yards untouched--and it was all downhill after that for the visiting Division I-AA Panthers. Next: Tulsa

21) KANSAS STATE (1-0) BEAT N. ILLINOIS, 47-7

The Wildcats cruised in their opener as JC transfer Michael Bishop passed for four touchdowns and ran for another--all in the first half. Kansas State’s first tough game is against Nebraska at Lincoln on Oct. 4. Next: Ohio

22) NORTHWESTERN (1-1) LOST TO WAKE FOREST, 27-20

For the second year in a row, the Wildcats were upset by Wake Forest. This time, Brian Kuklick led the Demon Deacons at Winston-Salem, N.C., completing 23 of 33 passes for 273 yards. Next: Duke

23) USC (0-1) LOST TO NO. 5 FLORIDA STATE, 14-7

The Trojans’ hopes ended when Florida State free safety Dexter Jackson tackled receiver Billy Miller for no gain after a short completion on fourth and six at the Seminole 26 with 2:20 left. Next: Washington State

24) COLO. ST. (1-1) LOST TO NO. 8 COLORADO, 31-21

Moses Moreno threw three touchdown passes for the Rams, including two on plays of 61 and 71 yards to Darran Hall, but two interceptions at the start of the third quarter were devastating. Next: At Utah State

25) MICHIGAN ST. (1-0) BEAT W. MICHIGAN, 42-10

The Spartans, who forced only 18 turnovers last season, intercepted four passes and recovered three fumbles. They also doubled a 21-point lead in less than two minutes. Next: Memphis
