Bilingual Education Suit Hearing Today

Share

A federal judge in Sacramento is expected to hear arguments today in a bilingual education lawsuit involving the Orange Unified School District, attorneys said.

The hearing before U.S. District Judge William B. Shubb comes three weeks after a Sacramento County Superior Court judge issued an order temporarily blocking the district’s new English-immersion program.

Orange Unified officials are seeking to end a bilingual education program that offered native-language instruction to elementary schoolchildren who speak Spanish.

A coalition of parents and Latino rights groups has sued to stop the district.

Attorneys for the school district petitioned to move the lawsuit to a federal court. Today, the district will seek to lift the temporary restraining order, said Celia Ruiz, an attorney for Orange Unified.
