Council Will Review Plans for Shimizu Site

The future of one of the city’s prime pieces of undeveloped land, known as the Shimizu site, will be considered Monday by the City Council.

Officials are seeking to update the city’s land-use plan, and council members want to gather ideas about what should be developed on the Shimizu site and other parcels.

The Shimizu site, named for the Japanese development company, sits across from MainPlace Mall on the city’s northern tip.

The development company had proposed building an upscale community of shops, offices and homes on the land, but canceled those plans amid financial difficulties.

Newport Beach developer Steve Hopkins recently proposed a retail center for the site.

Monday’s meeting will be in the community meeting room at the new police headquarters, 60 Civic Center Plaza.
