Ferreira Not Chasing Kariya

The question posed to General Manager Jack Ferreira was the same as it’s been these past few days, weeks and months: Anything new with Paul Kariya?

“No,” Ferreira said Sunday at the Edmonton Coliseum.

Ferreira accompanied the team to Edmonton along with assistant general manager David McNab and top scouts Paul Fenton and Alain Chainey. They were there to continue rating players as the first round of cuts approaches.

But Ferreira had no plans to make a side trip to see Kariya at his Vancouver home or fly to Winnipeg to meet with his agent, Don Baizley.

Contract talks have been stalled since July, when the Ducks made an initial offer of $25 million for five seasons. Ferreira says Kariya and Baizley have not made a counteroffer, although it’s believed it will take more than $7 million per season to sign the all-star left wing.

Coach Pierre Page continued his experiment with defenseman Marc Moro at forward during Sunday’s exhibition loss to the Oilers.

“There are a lot of people ahead of him on defense,” Page said. “I told him, ‘Would you prefer to stay at home and practice or take a few shifts in the game at forward?’ He said he’d take the shifts at forward.”
