L.A. Police Commission to Reassign Executive Director, Seek Successor
Seeking a change of leadership, the Los Angeles Police Commission is ousting its executive director and will conduct a nationwide search to find a replacement, officials said Monday.
Richard Dameron, who has held the position since November 1993, will be removed from the post and reassigned to an as-yet undetermined civilian job within the Los Angeles Police Department, officials said.
Dameron had previously worked as an analyst for the commission and the LAPD.
“They decided that they wanted a change at the top,” Dameron said, adding that he was trying to be “philosophical” about his removal.
Commission President Edith Perez said Dameron served the commission well and “did an excellent job” during several difficult years at the commission. She said Dameron was “not being fired,” but rather “reabsorbed” within the LAPD.
“It’s time for a change,” Perez said. “Time to get our house in order.”
Perez said the commission is hoping to increase the importance and the responsibilities of the executive director’s job to make it more in line with the role of a general manager of a city department.
“We want to upgrade the staff so it becomes more powerful,” she said.
