Mexican Independence Day Is Commemorated
Los Angeles commemorated Mexican Independence Day on the steps of City Hall Monday night, highlighted by a ceremonial “cry for freedom” at 10:45 p.m., the hour said to be when Mexicans launched their battle for freedom from Spain in 1811.
The ceremony marked the 186th anniversary of Father Miguel Hidalgo’s famous “El Grito de Dolores”--the cry that sparked the battle in the town of Dolores Hidalgo in the state of Guanajuato.
Entertainment on an elaborate stage at 1st and Spring streets included traditional folkloric singing and dancing, mariachi bands and contemporary Mexican music stars. The event is the largest celebration in the nation of Mexican Independence day, which is observed today.
