Crowded Conditions for Policewomen Cited

Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg told the council’s Public Safety Committee that female police officers in the Rampart Division station are forced to take turns in the locker room and are “stepping on each other” when shifts change.

“Rampart is not any old division,” Goldberg said. “It has an intensity all its own. . . . I think it’s an intolerable situation.”

But while Goldberg called for more extensive renovations, the council panel sided with Police Chief Bernard C. Parks, who agreed that the facility needs some immediate improvements but said the city shouldn’t spend too much on a station that a consultant has said should be replaced.

“I think the key for us now and in the future is that there’s only so much we can do with these facilities,” Parks said. “But do we . . . spend more money on a building that in the future you’re going to tear down and not use?”
