Council to Consider Water Rate Increases
The City Council tonight will consider water rate increases.
The proposal would adjust residential and commercial retail water rates over a 3 1/2-year period, starting Jan. 1, 1998. The new rate would raise the average residential water bill about $1.88 per month in the first year.
According to the proposed schedule, rates would increase 6% on Jan. 1, 1998, 4% on July 1, 1999, 3% on July 1, 2000 and 2% on July 1, 2001. Fixed water rates would remain unchanged.
Officials say the rate increases are needed to offset the rising cost of wholesale water from Tri-Cities Municipal Water District. Since the last increase in 1993, water costs have increased 24.4%, straining the city’s water utility budget.
A public hearing on the proposed water consumption rate is scheduled for Nov. 5.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be held in the City Council Chambers, 100 Avenida Presidio. Information: (714) 361-8200.
