A San Fernando Valley man has been sentenced to almost two years in jail following his third conviction on drunk-driving charges, Los Angeles City Atty. James K. Hahn announced Wednesday.

Miguel Zacarias, 37, of Granada Hills was sentenced Tuesday to 653 days in jail by San Fernando Municipal Court Commissioner Alvin Nierenberg after entering no-contest pleas to single counts of driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license.

Prior to his most recent arrest, Zacarias’ driver’s license had been suspended as a result of two other convictions for driving with a blood-alcohol level higher than the legal limit of 0.08, the city attorney said.

Nierenberg also placed Zacarias on five years’ probation, revoked his license and ordered him to install an ignition interlock device on any vehicle he may drive in the future, said Deputy City Atty. Victor Kalustian, who handled the case.

Zacarias was also designated a habitual offender, which means he could face enhanced punishment if he is convicted of similar offenses in the future, Kalustian said.

The drunk-driving incident that led to Zacarias’ most-recent conviction occurred in 1995, Kalustian said. An arrest warrant was issued when Zacarias failed to appear in court on the charge. He was arrested in August.

Zacarias was ordered to begin serving his jail term Oct. 10, officials said.
