Grambling-Alabama State Is Moved From Rose Bowl
Grambling State Coach Eddie Robinson may never return to the Rose Bowl.
Sluggish ticket sales and a lack of up-front money have forced Alabama State officials to cancel their agreement with promoters to stage a Nov. 8 game against Grambling State at the Rose Bowl. Instead, the game will be played Nov. 9 at the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, Ala.
The San Gabriel Valley Black Chamber of Commerce had hoped to raise at least $100,000 by this month to stage one of the last games in Robinson’s 56-year career.
Robinson, 78, is retiring at the end of this season as college football’s winningest coach. He has 405 victories and has said he always dreamed of returning to the stadium.
Robinson’s Grambling team beat Sacramento State, 34-7, in the 1968 Pasadena Bowl.
