Seaside Lagoon to Get Picnic Areas, Water Slides in Face-Lift
Barbecue pits, grassy parks, picnic areas, playground equipment, water slides and a new pump system are scheduled to be added as part a $2 million face-lift planned for Seaside Lagoon this winter.
The popular saltwater park in King Harbor Marina was almost forced to close two years ago when city officials discovered that damage from the 1994 Northridge earthquake had posed several safety concerns.
The city spent $100,000 in temporary repairs to keep the park open while officials sought funding for long-term improvements on the city-operated water park.
The city recently received $1.7 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to make the necessary structural repairs and an additional $300,000 in county Proposition A funds, a voter-approved bond initiative for park repairs. The city will chip in $44,000.
Sue Armstrong, director of recreational services, said the repairs are scheduled to be completed by next summer.
She said the improvements will spruce up the park, which visited by nearly 90,000 annually.
