Woman Killed, 8 People Hurt in 2 Crashes

Two separate accidents, occurring at the same time Sunday night, left one woman dead and eight injured.

The woman was killed ina two-car accident in the 7500 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood about 6:15 p.m. Two people --adult twins-- were injured, one seriously.

Authorities said the dead woman, who they said was in her 30s, was thrown from her car. The Twins --one in serious condition, the other in fair condition, --were taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center and Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, respectively.

Coroner’s officials had not indentified the dead woman, and hospital officials declined to identify the injured, pending notification of their families.

Jim Wells, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department, said the twins were in their 30s. He did not know if they and the woman were in separate cars. LAPD traffic detectives were investigating the crash.

About the same time as the North Hollywood crash, another two-car accident on the Golden State Freeway, south of Brand Avenue in Pacoima, injured six people, including three children.

Two of the children, a 11-year-old boy and his 7-year-old sister, were airlifted to Childrens Hospital. Hospital spokesman Steve Rutledge said the two were in stable but serious condition, with chest trauma.

Another helicopter took the third child, a 9-year-old girl, to UCLA Medical Center. That child was in stable but serious condition Sunday night. The girl suffered trauma tot he abdomen, he said.

Two women, 66 and 32 years old, were taken by ambulance to Pacifica Hospital of the Valley, where they were listed in fair condition.

Another victim was taken to Northridge Hospital Medical Center and was listed in stable condition. Nursing Supervisor Sylvia Mieure identified that woman as Mary Ortiz, 30.
