Expo Trainer Suspended Seven Games

Montreal Expo trainer Ron McClain has been suspended for the final seven games of the season and fined a reported $200 by the National League for using profane and threatening language toward an umpire in the Expos’ 1-0 loss to the New York Mets on Sept. 14.
Montreal Manager Felipe Alou, second baseman Mike Lansing and McClain were ejected by plate umpire Larry Vanover after a disputed ninth-innning play at home plate.

Cincinnati Red closer Jeff Shaw, who leads the NL with 40 saves, bruised his left knee when he was hit by Bob Abreu’s eighth-inning line drive in the Reds’ loss to the Astros. It was the first time since Aug. 24 that Shaw had failed in a save opportunity and it ended his streak of consecutive saves at 15. . . . Eddie Sawyer, manager of the Philadelphia Phillies’ “Whiz Kids” team that won the 1950 NL pennant, died Monday in Phoenixville, Pa. following a brief illness. He was 87.
